A Clinical Study of Foreign Body in the Pediatric Field


Abstract
A clinical study was done in 107 cases, under -the diagnosis of foreign body aspiration(respiratory & alimentary. tract) at the Department of Pediatrics, Chungnani National University College of Medicine from Jan. 1980 to Dec. 1982
The results were obtained as follows
1) Foreign body aspiration was more common in male (1.74: 1) and most of the patient were under the 5 years of age. In the respiratory tract, 58.30¢¥ was less than 2 years of age & in the alimentary tract, 71.600 was less than 5 years of age.
2) Foreign body of the alimentary tract was more frequently seen than the respiratory tract (7-9: 1) and the most common site of the respiratory tract aspiration was larynx (58.3%). Foreign bodies lodged in the right bronchi were more 3 times than left.
3) The most common kind of foreign body in the respiratory tract is peanut(25%). In the alimentary tract, coin (61. 1%), fishbone (14.7%), spots of baduk (6.3%), pin (3.2%), & etc in this order.
4) Common symptoms were dyspnea. (33.3%), cyanosis (33.3%), choking (25%) & cough. And clinical signs were chest retraction (33.3%), decreased breathing sound & rale in this order.
5) The carelessness of some sort is responsible in most all cases (79.4%).
6) Within the 6 hours, 11 cases (91. 7%) of the respiratory tract and 81 cases (85.3%) of the alimentary tract were visited to the hospital.
7) The diagnostic methods of the respiratory tract foreign bodies wre direct laryngoscopy (50%), endobronchial aspiration (33.3%) & X-Ray (16. 7%) and in the alimentary tract, clinical history, symptoms (28.4%) & X-Ray (71.6%) in this study.
